However, I should say that the Travel John is not strictly for females. It can be used by men and women alike. The unisex design makes it rather unique among the portable urinating devices and urine collection devices I’ve reviewed here.

The travel urinal itself is compact and very easy to use. You simply unroll, position, and go. The urine instantly turns to a gel that absorbs all the liquid and the smell. They are completely leak proof so, you can keep them around to re-use until they are full. And, when the time comes, they’re also easy to dispose of.
I drink a lot of fluids and need to be conscious of where the bathrooms are and aren’t. Whether hunting, hiking, or hiding out in the woods, sometimes you just cannot hold it any longer. Yes there are lots of times where there are other alternatives, but for that one time you really need it, it’s worth it’s weight in gold. I have used it several times and it’s awesome. As I said, there is no odor and no worry that it will leak, even when it falls over on it’s side. This is a must for urban and back woods survival alike.
Snakes, poison ivy, and other unpleasant menaces are no longer of any concern. I haven’t used them for cycling yet, however on a recent camping trip, I was caught inside my tent for the duration of a long thunderstorm. The Travel John worked perfectly. I’ll never be without it on a trip again. I am very pleased that it is easy for females to use.
What Are The Weaknesses Of The Travel John?
Well… not too many really.
You should be aware that Travel John’s are not vacuum operated devices. They depend on natural gravity to direct your liquids down into the plastic bag where they become a solid gel. That means you must position yourself high enough to create a definite downward flow so gravity can do its thing. My first experience with Travel John was while sitting in my car. I wasn’t raised up enough and I got some unwelcomed back-flow. So be sure to raise yourself up higher than a normal sitting position when using this product.
Also, a used Travel John might be an awkward and embarrassing thing to carry around. When used, it expands from a small, innocuous packet to a 12″ long and 3″ in diameter filled tube. And it’s also quite hefty because the gel is filled with liquid. Carrying this substantial tube with a funny-looking spout on the end is somewhat embarrassing. So I keep unused Travel John’s in a regular disposable plastic grocery bag with tissue and clean wipes. When the Travel John is used, the plastic grocery bag is a very convenient way to hide the contents while you carry it without notice until you can throw it away.
Lastly, don’t wait TOO long to use it. It only holds about 28 ounces, which is a lot for most situations, but it is possible to over-fill it if you have a large bladder. You might want to loosen the bag and powder before using it so it it doesn’t need to expand all on its own. Smaller capacity bladder? Shouldn’t be a problem at all…
In summary, I find the Travel John to be an excellent product. It is convenient for men and women alike. It provides a safe, sanitary, leak proof solution for those times when you just can’t wait.
